January 2023 Meeting
BELUG: Supporting Linux and open source for 18+ years.
The next meeting is March 14th at 6:30pm at the North Bellevue Community Center. The address is:
North Bellevue Community Center
4063 148th Ave NE
Bellevue, WA. 98007.
Please come early, if you can, to help set up the room.
We are always interested in presentations related to Linux. Please reach out if you have one, or more, that you could share with us.
Please consider joining KEGS. That membership helps pay for our room rental and you get access to a host of nationwide training events. Check out the KEGS web site.
The meeting will follow our normal format with introductions all around, collecting technical questions to answer later, then any presentations, finishing with our best answers to the technical questions.
Last month we discussed:
Kernel configuration and the pitfalls building your own kernel.
Photo editing and management tools including digikam and hugin.
Home automation is another recurring topic and network video recorders, NVR's are often part of the automation. An advanced feature might go like this: When your NVR software detects an event it sends a message to your cellphone and shows you a delivery person at your door and lets you talk to them, all without Google or Siri. I use motion as my NVR. Links:
We touched on munin, which is a network resource monitoring system.
Ventoy was mentioned again.
Jason shared some pictures of his custom keyboards. They were not your standard keyboards. I hope we can get a full presentation in the future. He uses QMK for keyboard firmware configurations.
There is an open source convention in May in Vancouver BC.
Recent updates to ReactOS, an open source windows server replacement.
There was another mention about Clear Linux.
We have an ongoing question on the best way to keep mail back on an IMAP server so you can read all your mail from multiple computers, for example from a dual booted laptop with windows and Linux. Does anyone have any experience they can share with us? And yes, we have done some Google searches on the topic.
Thank you everyone for an interesting meeting. Hope to see you Tuesday.
